Birch Lake Association History

In the early 1980s, Birch Lake area residents became concerned when increased lakeshore development, recreational use, and fishing pressure became issues. An educational program was developed with the help of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Cass County Department of Soil and Water, and the Mississippi Headwaters Board. This led to the Birch Lake Association being incorporated as a Minnesota nonprofit corporation on December 13, 1982. The original directors were John Fank, Richard Johnstone, Frank Kovach, Robert Mayer, Melvin Nefstead Sr., LaVerne Nies, Earl Schwanz, and Anton Thomas.

Mission Statement

The membership of the Birch Lake Association pledges to work together to protect and enhance the quality of the water, the aquatic environment, the fishery, and the wildlife of Birch Lake and its surrounding watershed. We are committed to preserving the health of our lake for present and future generations.
